Ka-Bar Short Black Fighting Knife Review

!±8± Ka-Bar Short Black Fighting Knife Review

The Ka-bar Black Fighting Knife is a variation of the USMC Fighting & Utility Knife. The Short version of the Ka-bar Black Fighting Knife has a 5 inch blade, compared to the 7 inch blade the standard model has.

The Basics

The Ka-Bar Short Black Fighting Knife has a 5-1/4 inch blade, and is 9-1/4 inches overall. The blade is made of 1095 high carbon steel. The handle is rubber; the sheath is leather.

My Review

I got my Kabar short a few years ago. When I first picked up the Short Fighting Knife, I noticed right away that it is a very well-balanced knife. Additionally, the rubber hand and guard make the knife very easy and safe to grip. This knife just feels good to me. It feels secure and powerful in my hand.

The blade has excellent penetration. I once had to use this knife to dispatch a wounded animal, for which it was very effective and proved quite up to the task. The basic leather sheath that comes with this knife is quite effective. It will be very tight at first, but should loosen up over time. Some people complain that the sheath is not much, but I find it to be great!

There are a couple things to watch out for with this knife. The biggest thing to be aware of is that this knife is not intended to be a highly corrosion resistant knife, so don't use it around saltwater or other corrosion inducing environments. Also, the blade is designed for strength and penetration, so you won't find it very useful for finer cutting and slicing jobs.

Conclusion: A great knife - one of my favorites for everyday use, especially where a large, strong knife is needed.

US Marines - A Strong History Of Bravery And Service

!±8± US Marines - A Strong History Of Bravery And Service

The United States Marines are a highly specialized branch of the U.S. Military, known for their rapid deployment and amphibious warfare abilities. The mission of the Marines is triple-pronged; to defend or seize naval bases and other land operations as needed, to develop equipment and tactics that will advance the capabilities of amphibious landing forces, and to perform other duties as directed by the President.

Created on November 10, 1775 as the Continental Marines, this small force originally consisted of infantry soldiers who served aboard naval vessels, defending the ship, engaging in combat during landing and boarding actions, and manning any raiding parties.

Having been involved in every armed American military conflict since, the force quickly evolved. During the War of 1812, Marines participated in frequent frigate battles, which were some of the first American victories in this eventually lost conflict. Though they still fought, the Marine forces experienced decline and disorganization in the latter part of the 19th century.

It wasn't until the Spanish-American War of 1898 that the Marines entered what is often considered their formative years. During the conflict, Marines were responsible for leading forces ashore and were able to demonstrate their invaluable ability to deploy quickly. This was when the Marines seized Guatanamo Bay, a base still used today by the United States Navy.

The Marines continued to play a crucial role in the first World War, and would capture America's imagination and pride in the Pacific battles of World War II. Marines were absolutely essential to the success of difficult island battles such as Tarawa, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima, a seize made famous by the infamous flag-raising photograph that is so often used as a symbol of victory and military commitment.

Today, Marines are very focused on infantry development. Their philosophy emphasizes the importance of close combat, rather than depending solely on strategic bombing or more distance-oriented battle. Prized for their ability to deploy rapidly, their loyalty, and their proud traditions, the United States Marines are an integral part of the United States' Department of Defense.

Respect the Military Like They Deserve

!±8± Respect the Military Like They Deserve

Throughout American history our military has been an integral part in our well being and the well being of the entire world. Many people tend to think that we have put our nose where it does not belong, or that we have started wars with countries for no apparent reason. However many of the wars that we have been involved in has either protected someone that could not protect themselves, or protect the future well being of our country.

No matter how you feel about a particular war, or the reason that we are fighting in that war, you should always show respect to our military that is fighting there. I can remember quite a few times in our history where respect was not shown to our military. The men and women of the military that go to fight in the war do not have a choice about whether they want to fight or not. They are fighting so you and I do not have to. They signed up to risk their life so that our country can remain free and prosperous.

After the Vietnam War was over our soldiers came back to disdain and disgust from the American people. I know that the way the war was handled by our government was not done very well. I also know that many people protested the war, which was their right, but they should not disrespect the men and women who fought because they were just following orders. When the soldiers came back from the war we should have had parades and showed gratitude to them. However the soldiers from the Vietnam War received none of this.

The reason I am bringing this up is that we are in a very unpopular war now in Iraq, and I do not want us to allow our dislike of a war to cause us to forget about the people who are actually fighting in it. Remember when this war is over and our soldiers come back from the fight to tell them thank you and show the military the respect that they deserve.

Big Knives and Choppers for Wilderness Survival and Camping

!±8± Big Knives and Choppers for Wilderness Survival and Camping

Big knives have always fascinated me and I know they have the same effect on a lot of other people as well. They bring up images of Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett, mountain men, and the Long Knives. Small knives are useful, practical, and handy, but they just don't fire the imagination like large knives do. Both are necessary for the wilderness, especially if you don't carry an axe or tomahawk. The definition of a large knife varies, but most people have it in the 7-9" and up range.

Big knives can be used for the big jobs that a Fallkniven F1 or similar size knife just can't do with any facility, but can still handle most of the smaller, finer jobs that the small knives do. They can be used for any kind of heavy work, such as chopping, batonning, clearing branches, and such. Batonning (splitting small to medium chunks of wood by driving the knife through the wood with a wooden baton) is made easy by a longer blade, especially if the grind is suitable. A longer, heavier knife makes chopping a breeze. Sure, it may not be as easy as chopping with an axe, but a knife is a lot easier to carry! An accomplished worker can do most all of the small jobs as well. A Busse may not clean a fish as well as a Buck Vanguard, but it will still do the job and works immensely better for shelter building and procuring firewood. The best option is to just carry a folder or a small fixed blade along with a chopper.

Big knives can be found in any configuration desired. There are the more traditionally shaped bowies like the Cold Steel Trailmaster and Recon Scout. Ka-bar's Becker line is excellent quality for for a low price. The Becker BK-9 and BK-7 are great choices and the favorites of many outdoorsmen. The Ka-bar USMC and related knives aren't quite the large chopper-type of knife, but they are still large enough to do some chopping and splitting and have a great history. The Ka-bar Large Heavy Bowie in both its sizes has a good reputation for an inexpensive large knife. Busse knives, Ferhrman, and such companies are very good quality, but you definitely pay for what you get. If you can afford them, though, there aren't many knives better. Another option for the large knife category is a short machete. A 10-12", maybe even 14" machete from a good company like Condor, Tramontina, or Ontario will do the job well and for very little money, especially the Tramontina.
